What constitutes science and technology (S&T) industries in Maine?
The Maine Science and Technology Foundation is in the process of examining how to define high technology industries, and we need your help. Researchers over the years have proposed a variety of definitions for identifying high-tech industries. The definitions typically are based on the industries’ outputs — their products or services — or the type and level of their inputs. Often the definition of high-tech industries boils down to those with big research and development budgets and a large proportion of workers like engineers, physical scientists and computer specialists. The question has more than academic significance. Is Maine’s high tech employment growing? The answer, in part, could depend on how one defines high tech employment. The high-tech job count usually includes all the employees of each high-tech company, from the mathematician developing formulas to the accountant keeping the payroll.
