What constitutes direct discrimination?
This can occur if it is based on the employer’s perception of a job applicant’s or a worker’s religion/belief, regardless of whether their perception is correct or not. It can also occur if it is based on the religion/belief of a third party (e.g. if the employee associates with friends with a particular religion/belief or if they refuse to carry out an employer’s instruction to discriminate against someone who has a particular religion/belief).
