What constitutes a research paper source?

Not if you aren’t going to use them as a source for your paper. Otherwise it doesn’t make sense. Sources are anything that you use to put in your paper. Now if you have the source and you do the research and find it doesn’t work for the paper, then don’t include it in the works cited. But if you quote from a website or a newspaper, you can do a seperate sheet from the Bibliography, to be sure and tell the teacher where you got that information from. And also make sure that the website is updated, because you may have pulled your source but it might have been updated since then.

A source is any written material from which you gathered data to create your paper. It does not have to be a quote, just a source of information for your paper.
