What connects the Atlantic Charter of 1941 and the United National Charter of 1945?
Atlantic Charter, signed August 14, 1941, set the stage for the United Nations Charter of 1945. The Atlantic Charter was the production of a meeting between President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. In the Atlantic Charter, they established the common interests of both countries in their continued fight against the axis powers. These same principles, when applied internationally, formed the covenant that is now the United Nations. These include “the rights of all peoples to chose the form of government under which they live” and “to see sovereign rights and self government restored to those who have been forcibly deprived of them” (Atlantic Charter). These, along with the other covenants of the Atlantic Charter, were embraced in the creation of the United Nations Charter in 1945. While the Atlantic Charter served the alliance of Britain and the United States, the same mutual understanding was used to embody the need for a global understanding.
