What compression program should I use instead of “compress, zip or gzip”?
bzip2 generally has the best compression ratios but is significantly slower than gzip (particularly for large files). Unless you’re extremely short on space or the files are small, gzip tends to give the best time/size trade off. Zip creates files that use the PKZIP archive format, which includes CRC checksums of the archive contents. It can therefore be useful if you are posting an archive file on the internet for others to download.
