What complications can arise in second pregnancy in case of Rh incompatibility?
In case a Rh negative mother carries another Rh-positive child, her Rh antibodies will recognize the Rh antigens on the surface of the baby’s blood cells as foreign, and pass into the baby’s bloodstream and attack those cells. This can lead to swelling and rupture of the baby’s red blood cells leading to reduction in baby’s blood count. This condition is termed as hemolytic or Rh disease of the newborn. The baby’s RBC count can get dangerously low & may prove fatal.
