What company first used the Internet?
Internet originated in the 1970s as a response from the US to USSR’s Sputnik launch. The objective was to share information and save communication channels in a war-like situation. On October 29, 1969, the first data packet was transmitted over a computer network in UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). The technology initially remained confined to educational institutes. Later by 1978, the Internet went international when Western Union International, British Post Office and Tymnet developed the first international network based on packet switching technology. January 1, 1983 saw the advent of first TCP/IP based network created by the National Science Foundation (NSF), US. The network was developed for a university and eventually became NSFNet. Gradually the commercial potential of the Internet was realized. Several independent networks such as Usenet, BITNET, JANET and X.25 were developed.
