THX Surround EX functionality will be available on THX ULTRA certified equipment. THX also specifies that two rear speakers (a dual rear speaker array for the mono back channel) are to be supported by THX Surround EX equipment. THX Surround EX processors are also required to implement bass management, independent time delays, level adjustments and THX RE-EQ for each of the two speakers employed as the surround back channel. Some manufacturers are choosing to implement their own 6.1 decoding features (apart from THX/Dolby.) These units will be compatible with Surround EX encoded DVDs and are said to provide very similar results to THX Surround EX decoding.
