It is based on a conglomeration of The Invincible Iron Man series as well as the Avengers series including West Coast Avengers. All of them Marvel Comics titles. Iron Man was created in the 60’s so some historical adjustments were necessary in the film but overall it is very accurate and faithful to the comics. Pepper was an original Iron Man character and Jim Rhodes was created in the 70’s and later became War Machine donning a suit of his own. He appears in the Avengers comics as he was a founding member of that group and an active member, more on than off, till present. The character Iron Man also appeared in his own segment of the first Marvel Comics animated series. Entitled Marvel Super-Heroes, it was released in 1967-1968. The show featured different heroes during different segments such as The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Namor the Sub-Mariner, The Mighty Thor, as well as Iron Man. BTW he had a really groovy theme song. They also had an Avengers segment where many of them
