What colour would you get if you breed a knabstrupper stallion with a piebald mare?
The answer is: You could get just about any combination of the two, but….. The Knabstrupper registry does not permit breeding to horses with any sort of pinto gene. The reason is that the two different color genes are so very contrasting and can hide for generations. (Well, genetically, they do not actually hide because they are not recessive, but instead are dominant, but they sort of hide in that a horse can have the gene and it only be expressed so minimally that it is not readily apparent to the eye.). For example. If you bred a leopard spotted Knabstrupper to a piebald (black & white pinto) you could get a horse that looks solid black (let’s say it has a tiny white spot on it’s shoulder and a bit striping of the hooves, but is otherwise black). You’d think it was a solid black horse. If you sold it and the new owner did not know it was a cross of Knabstrupper and Pinto, they might also think they have a solid horse. When they bred it, even to a solid horse, it could produce a WI
