What colour do cats and dogs see in is it black and white or orange ?

Neither cats nor dogs see in black and white, or only in orange. They can see a certain amount of colour, but not as great a range as we humans can – the reason is that they have fewer cones (the colour-sensing cells) in their eyes than we do, and more rods (the light-sensing cells). They also have a layer of reflective cells called the tapetum lucidum at the back of the eye, which reflects any light not absorbed the first time it enters the eye back onto the retina, giving it a second chance to be absorbed. These features greatly aid the night vision of cats and dogs – they can see in much lower levels of light than we require. The tapetum is also the reason their eyes appear to glow in the dark when light is shone on them.
