In 1903, the American firm of Binney & Smith marketed its first package of Crayola Crayons. Already involved with the educational market, Binney & Smith set about designing quality crayons for use in schools, which had only poor-quality domestic crayons and could not afford the better-quality European crayons for students. The yellow-and-black box of Crayola Crayons contained eight nontoxic wax crayons, and the assortment of colors included black, red, blue, green, yellow, orange, brown and purple crayons.
