What cloud does freezing rain come from?
Freezing rain comes from cumulus clouds. However, it actually falls as regular rain. The reason it’s freezing rain is the fact that there is a temperature inversion near the surface of the earth (cold air at the surface, with warmer air above). If the cold ( < 32 degrees Fahrenheit) air layer at the surface is large enough, the rain will freeze in the air and fall as sleet. However, with freezing rain, the layer is not large enough for the rain to freeze in the air. Therefore, it hits the surface and freezes on contact.
