What clinical experiences are available during the graduate years?

In the past, the UAB MSTP has strongly encouraged all students to obtain some periodic clinical exposure during their dissertation years, There was no formalized mechanism for this exposure, but some opportunities were to 1) Shadow their mentor (if a clinician); 2) Choose a physician in the area they were interested in and ask to shadow them; or 3) Work in the UASOM Student staffed Equal Access Clinic. However, starting with the entering class of 2009, all MSTP students during their dissertation years will be required to complete a total of 20 half-day clinics in the specialty of their choice. This experience is undergoing approved by the UASOM to receive credit as an Ambulatory Clinic Clerkship. In addition, all UAB MSTP students are given the option of completing their 4-week Family Medicine Elective immediately after their MS2 year, prior to entering their final summer research rotation.
