What climate does a kiwi bird live in?
The Kiwi is native to New Zealand, a country which has a rather wet climate. The Kiwi being flightless inhabits forested areas where the ground is covered by a layer of soft decomposing vegetation which in turn is inhabited by many earthworms, the main diet of this bird. The Kiwi’s long beak is used to probe for worms. When one is located the Kiwi plunges the beak into the “ground” and pulls the worm out. This bird is active only at night. I have seen this happen at the Auckland zoo. I am a retired veterinarian who lived in NZ for several years. One time I was visiting a veterinary colleague who was in charge of the zoo. He went out every night to feed worms to the Kiwis. The worms were spread out and covered with a layer of composited vegetation. It was fascinating to watch the Kiwis find and devour the worms. This bird has been protected for many years. It is about the same size as a domestic hen. The eggs are very large being about three times the size of a hen’s egg.
