What chemicals do organic farmers use?
Organic farmers cannot use the chemicals of conventional production. Typically, organic production controls would allow products that have been made from plants. These are known as the botanical pesticides. For example, pyrethrin is made from pyrethrum daisies. As another exampale, a spray is made from the seeds of the neem tree. And typically organic production controls would also allow products that have been made from bacteria. These are known as the microbial pesticides. Examples are Bacillus thuringiensis, and Milky spore. Typically also, organic production controls would allow products that have been made with oils. One example is the refined petroleum in horticultural oil. And typically also, organic production controls would allow products that have been made with soap. These are known as insecticidal soaps.
