What characteristics should a narrative have to earn a high score on the writing test?
It would have a strong beginning, a strong middle, and a strong end. It would have transitions. It would show progression of time for a narrative. It would have elaboration. It would have some main events and elaboration on those events, rather than a listing of a lot of different things that happened within a time period. It would have some variety of language so that all the sentences weren’t sounding alike and starting the same. A really top-notch paper would include some examples of figurative language, or pieces of conversation. Those are things that hold a reader’s attention. We try to help our children understand that their writing needs to hold the reader’s attention. If it doesn’t hold a reader’s attention, why will they spend time with it? You write for someone else to read your creation and your ideas. How do you coach a child to be a better writer?
