The N.J.A.C. specifies two levels of certification for work in a school library. To qualify for work as a School Library Media Specialist , (1) you must earn a master’s degree and complete at least 36 graduate credits in library studies in specific areas as outlined in the Code; (2) in addition you must either be a certified teacher, have completed a teacher prep program with or without student teaching, or take a coherent sequence of education coursework as outlined in the Code. To qualify for work as an Associate School Library Media Specialist , (1) you must complete at least 18 graduate credits in library studies in specific areas as outlined in the Code; (2) in addition you must either be a certified teacher, have completed a teacher prep program with or without student teaching, or take a coherent sequence of education coursework as outlined in the Code.
