What census records are available for Cambria County?
The census was taken every 10 years, starting with the year 1790. Due to privacy laws census records are sealed for 72 years (In 2012, the 1940 census will be made public). If you know where your ancestor lived in a year ending in “0” from 1930 back to 1810 you can receive an actual page of the census in the census taker’s own handwriting. These copies are made from microfilm. Cambria County was established on March 26, 1804, from parts of Somerset, Bedford and Huntingdon Counties. The first census record available for Cambria County is 1810. The 1890 census records for Pennsylvania were COMPLETELY destroyed in a fire! However, you can refer to the Special Veterans Schedule if your ancestor was in the civil war.
