What causes the relatively high death rate in non-Hispanic black male teenagers?
Homicide is the leading cause of death in non-Hispanic black male teenagers. The risk of dying from homicide in this group is 39.2 males per 100,000 population, compared to 17 in Hispanic males and 3 in white males. Summary: 16,375 US teenagers died, on average, each year from 1999 to 2006. Motor vehicle accidents caused the majority of teen deaths. Two of every five black male teenager deaths were homicides.
