The recent devaluation is a result of the European Union’s debt problems with some of its member nations (most notably Portugal, Ireland, Greece, and Spain) Greece has been in the news a lot lately as its debt issues are particularly bad. When investors/speculators (like Soros) see weaknesses they sell the currency, or sell the currency ‘short’ often magnifying the underlying weakness.
