Momentum is the only thing that “causes” the earth to turn. The planet formed out of a dust cloud that was rotating and so as it formed or coalessed, it continued to rotate. Now that it has acquired all this mass, it would take tremendous energy to stop if from rotating. Nothing is forcing it to rotate. It simple continues to do what its done since it was formed.
