What causes the aurora borealis to change colors?

0

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer has brothers flying around and they all have different colored noses. The colors reflect off the clouds.

The aurora is caused by molecules of different elements in the upper atmopshere interacting with ionized particles from the sun. As winds and magnetic fields in the upper atmosphere move the molecules around, they interact with the incoming ions. Most aurorae are green and red from atomic oxygen. Molecular nitrogen and nitrogen ions produce some low level red and very high blue/violet aurorae.
