I dont think Socially anxiety CAUSES people to smoke. There are a million different reasons why we put the first one in our mouths (because we all have our own excuses) but addiction is the reason people continue to smoke – and a worry about turning into an evil monster if we stop!!! I think the reasons that people are or become socially anxious are as numerous as the people who do – people come up with strange ideas about what people around them think, but mostly I think it is fear and lack of confidence (about any number of things – clothes, looks, money, intellect, yadda yadda yadda) a general worry about not measuring up to some perceived standard that cause anxiety.
