What causes RP?

The death of photoreceptor cells in the retina is responsible for the symptoms of RP. A defective gene that fails to have the essential balance of proteins produced to keep photoreceptor cells healthy causes this. Over 100 gene defects have been recognised and so far research scientists have isolated over 30 defective genes causing forms of RP.

A person with RP has inherited (are born with) a faulty gene which causes the condition. This means that the ability of the retina to respond to light is affected as various parts cease to function.

Not much is known about what causes retinitis pigmentosa, except that the disease is inherited. Even if your mother and father don’t have retinitis pigmentosa, you can still have the eye disease when at least one parent carries an altered gene associated with the trait.

It is not known what causes this disease. But it is thought to be an autoimmune disease. This means that it is caused by the immune system attacking the body, and causing inflammation and tissue destruction.
