It seems to be due to a combination of genetic, hormonal and environmental factors. What is know is that something triggers the immune system to attack the joints and sometimes other organs, which causes rheumatoid arthritis to develop in adults and children. There does seem to be a genetic factor, but the medical community has yet to discover what it is. Rhumatoid arthritis is no respecter of persons. Middle aged women are more likely than men to develop rhumatoid arthritis, but when a man does develop rhumatoid arthritis, it is generally much more sever.
