What causes pot holes in dirt roads and how to stop them or fix them?
Pot holes on dirt roads are caused by the same thing that makes pot holes on paved roads – water. On a paved road, you get pot holes in the spring because water leaks into the cracks and then freezes during the night when it’s colder. The ice expands and loosens the surface, so traffic breaks up the surface and makes a pothole. On a gravel road, you don’t necessarily need the freezing, but puddling water will still seep into the ground, loosening the soil. The best solution is proper drainage and slope of the road. Unfortunately this means grading usually. You can try to fill the holes with gravel or other filler, but these are temporary solutions, just as patching a paved road is temporary. Sorry I don’t have a non-grading solution for you.
