What causes Patello-Femoral or Knee-Cap Pain?
In the normal knee, the patella glides up and down through a groove in the bottom end of the femur. When the knee is bent, the pressure on the patella is increased. If the patella does not track smoothly through the groove then there is an increase in pressure on the patella causing it to rub against the femur unevenly. This results in pain and inflammation anywhere around the patella, but more commonly on the inside/front area. This can be caused by muscle imbalance between the inside (medial) or outside (lateral) muscles, tight muscles/ fascia and pronated/ flat feet can also contribute. The reasons for your pain can be identified and rehabilitated by your Physiotherapist. Rehabilitation may involve manual therapy as well as supportive taping, activity modification and exercise to prevent recurrence of the condition. Have I Slipped a Disc?
