What causes osteitis pubis?
Osteitis pubis means an inflammation of the symphysis pubis. The symphysis pubis is the fibrous joint between the two halves of the pelvic bones where they join at the front of the body. It is in the middle of the bony ridge that marks the lower boundary of the abdomen. It is the most common inflammatory condition of this joint. Osteitis pubis is caused either by trauma, pelvic operations, repair of Inguinal hernia, childbirth or overuse through, for example, running. This causes excessive motion in the joint or muscle use, or in your friend’s case probably a shearing stress being applied to one half of the pelvis while hip movements are limited. In certain cases there may be actual bacterial infection and these cases will require antibiotic treatment. The condition normally resolves spontaneously.
