Bear in mind this is what I read from a medical book a while back so it might have changed since then or someone medically trained may know better/more. It’s caused by a subcutaneous bacterial infection by the same bacteria that causes strep throat that destroys soft tissue. This is what gave rise to it being called “flesh eating” bacteria. A large number of people carry it on their skin normally and infection can occur if you are cut or pricked. It’s incredibly rare to catch however and if caught requires the removal of the dead tissue and intravenous antibiotics. I think you can also use a hyperbaric chamber to help kill off the bacteria. The best prevention I’d recommend is that any wounds are cleaned and that if you notice swelling and pain that is larger than for that sort of injury and you start suffering flu symptoms you seek medical advice.
