Researchers think that a person must be genetically predisposed to getting MS and then must come into contact with three as yet undetermined environmental factors for the disease to develop. MS is difficult to diagnose since the lesions that are indicative of it do not necessarily show up at the onset of the disease. In addition to that there is no test that can definitively diagnose it. To further confound things, the disease is usually relapsing remitting meaning that it comes and goes. The symptoms also mimic 25-30 other diseases that a neurologist has to rule out in order to make a diagnosis. Consequently, diagnosis can take years or even a decade. As a consequence, the concern is being able to diagnose it, let alone early diagnosis. I have had MS for twenty years. Most of us who have it are not disabled.
