What causes motorcycle starter clutches to go bad?

Cranking for a log time because a bike is hard to start is a big culprit, but the starter not disengaging completely allowing it to drag and create heat can happen. I’ve also seen a low battery cause overheating as the lower the voltage, the higher the amps required to do the same job. Amps = heat!
