What causes mood disorders like depression (unipolar disorder) and bipolar disorder?
There is strong evidence that suggests that depressive disorders can be genetic or passed down throughout families. Depression can also be caused by many other factors including: * Environmental events. Depression often follows a triggering event such as the death of close family member, a job loss or an ended relationship. * Other health concerns. Other diseases and disorders that may have a role to play are diabetes, thyroid disease, adrenal gland disorders, multiple sclerosis, heart disease and cancer. * Hormonal imbalances may also play a part, particularly in postpartum depression. Regardless of cause, or origin, symptoms of depression should always be treated seriously. Seek the help of a competent physician.
