WHAT CAUSES MILDEW TO SMELL MUSTY?
Mildew is a destructive growth that feeds on a variety of organic materials and can cause permanent fiber damage. Dormant mildew exists freely in the environment and is activated by conditions of dampness and warmth, often within 72 hours. When mildew is eating away at the fibers, a musty odor is caused by the digestive action. When, through proper treatment, this odor is no longer present, it means that the mildew attacking the fibers has been neutralized.
