What causes metabolic syndrome X?
The exact cause of metabolic syndrome X is not known. You may be more likely to get metabolic syndrome X if you have insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone that acts as a key to allow glucose (sugar) to enter body cells. The glucose is then used for energy. With insulin resistance, your body cannot use insulin normally. This causes your body to make more insulin. This increase in insulin leads to a rise in blood fat levels and blood glucose (sugar) levels. Another factor that may increase your risk for metabolic syndrome X is extra fat around your abdomen. Lack of exercise and aging (getting older) may also increase your risk of getting metabolic syndrome X.
