What Causes Low Blood Protein?
Blood tests measure two types of protein in the blood, albumin and globulin. Albumin, manufactured in the liver, helps keep fluid in blood vessels and assists with tissue healing and growth. Globulin, made in the liver and by the immune system, consists of four subtypes, the largest portion being gamma globulin, an antibody. Low albumin levels often indicate liver damage, while low globulin levels often indicate low antibody production. Many disease processes cause low serum protein levels.
