What causes infantile glaucoma?
Most infantile glaucoma is a sporadic (that is “one off”) problem that will not recur in subsequent children. Rare cases of inherited infantile glaucoma have been described. Infrequently infantile glaucoma occurs in association with other abnormalities in an infant. Probably the two most common associations are congenital rubella (German measles) syndrome and Sturge-Weber syndrome (red to purple birth mark on the face, usually on one side). Glaucoma may occasionally be seen in infants with other eye problems such as cataracts.
