What causes gynecomastia and who can get it?
The exact causes of gynecomastia are unknown. It is currently believed that it is due to an imbalance of hormones. For teenage boys there are usually no underlying health-related concerns causing the condition. However, when it affects adult males there may be more serious underlying factors behind the appearance of breast tissue. In such cases tests should be carried out to ensure that the breast growth is not related to any problems with the liver, pituitary gland or testicles.
