What causes gonorrhoea and who can get it?
Gonorrhoea is spread through sexual contact. The bacteria that cause the infection are mainly found in the semen of infected men and vaginal fluids of infected women, so it is easily passed between people when they have sexual contact. An infected mother can also pass it onto her unborn baby during childbirth. Anyone who is sexually active can be at risk of getting gonorrhoea, especially people who change partners frequently or do not use a condom when having sexual intercourse.
