What causes elevated levels of ozone?
Ozone occurs both naturally and as a result of a reaction between other pollutants in the atmosphere. In East Riding of Yorkshire, there are two possible causes of elevated levels of ozone. In summer, higher ozone levels are due to the transport, by the wind, of ozone produced in other areas (up to several hundred miles away). In winter, higher ozone levels are due to atmospheric conditions dragging naturally occurring ozone down from the stratosphere.
