What causes elevated levels of nitrogen dioxide?
Short periods of elevated nitrogen dioxide levels (i.e. approaching the hourly standard) are not characteristic of East Riding of Yorkshire. However, long terms average levels (annual average) are elevated in some locations throughout the county. These are normally alongside busy roads where the emissions from traffic are the main source of the pollutant.
