What causes dark, puffy bags under the eyes?

In general, “puffy bags” are caused by excess, or prolapsed fat under the eyes (there is somewhat of a controversy as to exactly which of those it is, or possibly both). The treatment for that is removal of the excess fat, a procedure called a lower lid blepharoplasty, or “lower eyelid tuck.” This procedure is described in detail in my new book, EyeScapes, which includes text and photos, in case you want to read more about it. The dark circles, however, are more complicated; both in their origin, and their treatment. The best way to address them (they are felt to be caused by some excess pigment in the skin) is through a series of lightening peels. These are often not as successful as everyone wishes they were.
