What causes crooked teeth?
Crowded teeth, thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, premature loss of baby teeth, a poor breathing airway caused by enlarged adenoids or tonsils can all contribute to poor tooth positioning. And then there are the hereditary factors. Extra teeth, large teeth, missing teeth, wide spacing, small jaws – all can be causes of crowded teeth. Q: How Do Teeth Move? A: Tooth movement is a natural response to light pressure over a period of time. Pressure is applied by using a variety of orthodontic hardware (appliances), the most common being a brace or bracket attached to the teeth and connected by an arch wire. Periodic changing of these arch wires puts pressure on the teeth. At different stages of treatment your child may wear a headgear, elastics, a positioner or a retainer. Most orthodontic appointments are scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart to give the teeth time to move. Q: Will it be Uncomfortable? A: When teeth are first moved, discomfort may result. This usually lasts about 24 to 72 hours. Pati
Modern orthodontics do not know the cause of crooked teeth, despite much investigation. It is considered to be genetic since this supports, the treatments provided, common lay wisdom and the current status quo.
However evidence by researchers such as Robert S. Corruccini and others has provided evidence that almost conclusively shows that crooked teeth are cause by a change in the environment. The combined factors of decreases bite force (with soft modern foods), lowering of the jaw-tongue complex (open mouth postures from modern allergic blocked noses) and a change in the swallowing pattern (soft food replacing breast feeding too early) are the most likely cause and can explain nearly all malocclusion.
Our ancestors, all the other 5400 species of mammals (which which we share 90% plus of genome) and all indigenous populations have well aligned teeth from when they are born till they die. Modern humans have less then 5% excellently aligned teeth. Malocclusion appears in fossil records where ever and when ever society passes points of civilization. It have never been shown to have a genetic causes.
Familial resemblance of course does play a role, the genes do not causes it but determine which type you get.
Orthodontist are treating symptoms not cause, are you fixed if you have to wear a retainer for the rest of your life????????????
The British Orthodontic Society has been challenged to a debate on the causes of crooked teeth but have declined to make an public comment. How can the profession treat people, openly admit that they do not know the cause and avoid any discussion about it? A campaign has been started on facebook Y crooked teeth, be informed and have a look!!
