What causes convulsions to set in after hormone insulin injection in mice?
Convulsions or seizure activity can come from a variety of causes. One of the cause of seizures is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar.) Insulin causes glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream to be drawn into cells along with 2 potassium molecules. When the glucose is removed from the blood into the cells the level of blood glucose drops and can cause seizures (or convulsions.) People with diabetes who inject insulin to control their blood sugar can sometime have convulsions or seizures if their blood sugar drops too low. One antidote is Glucagon (another hormone) that can temporarily raise blood sugar.
