What causes cellulitis of the breast?
There can be many causes. Some causes include: • non-surgical wounds to the breast such as breast piercings (e.g. nipple ring), tattoos or animal bites • a delayed reaction in women who have had surgery and/or radiation or chemotherapy due to breast cancer What are the signs and symptoms of cellulitis? Signs and symptoms can include: • skin that is mildly swollen, red and warm to the touch • a sudden onset • breast tenderness or pain It is rare to have a fever and chills with cellulitis of the breast. A mass or changes on a mammogram or ultrasound are seldom seen. How is cellulitis of the breast treated? It is important to call your doctor right away if you have the above signs or symptoms. It is important to be treated as soon as possible to prevent the infection from spreading. • Your doctor may start you on antibiotics. • Your doctor may recommend the following to help you manage any pain: • Take acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol) for discomfort. • Apply a cold pack to the breast to help
