What causes autism and why are the number of autism cases increasing?
We don’t really know what exactly causes autism. There is no longer doubt that autism is biological in origin and genetic theory dominates. However, genes are not the only components. Most likely there is an environmental component as well, but we currently do not know what it is. Research data also suggests atypical brain development pre- and postnatally. We also do not know the exact reason why there is the increasing number of autism cases, but better recognition and the broadening of the autism spectrum may play role in rising rates of autism.
