Underwater volcanoes are the result of two possible causes: so called ‘hot spots’ in the Earth’s mantle in which case magma oozes through the oceanic crust; and plate subduction, where the denser oceanic plate moves under the less dense plate and melts upon contacting the mantle, creating underwater volcanoes.
