What causes acute nausea and vomiting?
Food poisoning, viral gastroenteritis, and certain medicines are the most common causes of nausea and vomiting. Viral gastroenteritis is an infection of the stomach and intestines caused by a virus. Other common causes of nausea and vomiting include: • Drinking large amounts of liquids that contain alcohol, such as beer, whiskey, rum, wine, or vodka. • Cancer medicine, using too much medicine, or if you suddenly stop using a regular medicine. • Early stages of a woman’s pregnancy. • Liver or pancreas inflammation (swelling). • Infection in the stomach, intestines, or other organs in the abdomen. • Trauma or injury to the head. • Anxiety (worry or fear). • Too much acid in the blood and tissues caused by conditions such as diabetes (high sugar levels in the blood).
