The burnt fuel is mixed and remixed in the engine to ensure a good burn of the fuel. The resultant pollutant is then passed through the exhaust catalytic converter and its chemistry is changed to a less pollutant chemical. All the chemistry terms mean a lot to the designers and the EPA but to most of us it takes a large amount of equipment we cant afford to check the emissions amounts. Our best check is the smell.
