What causes a person to become a serial killer?
Well, the vast majority of mentally ill people are not violent criminal or murderers. It’s true that there is a significantly higher rate of mental illness among violent criminals, but if violence were rooted in mental illness, then ALL violent criminal would be seriously mentally ill, not just SOME. I think you’ll find that imprisoned murderers and violent criminals, for the most part, are sane, coherent, and mentally competent individuals, if you bother to interview them. If this wasn’t the case, then how would serial killers be able to evade the police for long periods? I also don’t think it’s true that most killers are pure sociopaths, though many do fit that profile. Mental illness, or personality disorders may simply make an individual *more likely* to become violent, as opposed to being the root cause of violence.
